Chairman's Desk
The Malaysian furniture industry has maintained its export growth momentum in 2007. The export value of Malaysian furniture, inclusive of related parts and components grew by 5.8% to RM8.55 billion in 2007, from RM8.08 billion in 2006. Furniture exports accounted for 1.9 per cent of Malaysia's manufactured exports and 1.4 per cent of the country's total exports.
Malaysian furniture has made its way into the homes, offices and commercial outlets in over 160 countries world-wide with the main export markets being USA, Japan, Australia, UK and Singapore In 2007, Malaysia was ranked as the 10th largest furniture exporting nation in the world, 3rd largest in Asia and 2nd in ASEAN.
MFPC will continue to uphold its mission and objectives to promote and further develop the Malaysian furniture industry so as to establish Malaysia as a globally recognised source of competitive world class furniture. MFPC will continue to come up with effective marketing and promotional strategies and programmes that will be beneficial and meaningful to the Malaysian furniture industry. MFPC is conscious of its task and responsibility to help strengthen the presence of Malaysian furniture in the global market place, through also identifying new and potential markets, and implementing programmes, and disseminating useful market intelligence to assist manufacturers to make inroads into these emerging markets.
Malaysian furniture exports are faced with stiff competition from lower cost producing countries such as China and Vietnam. It therefore becomes more important to differentiate Malaysian furniture in the global market in terms of quality, design, innovativeness, reliability as suppliers, and utilisation of sustainable wood resources. These coupled with aggressive marketing strategies will help steer the industry ahead of competitors.
Despite the economic slowdown and stiff competitions faced by the industry, I am confident that the industry will continue to sustain its strong export performance as our industry is resilient and competitive in the production of well-designed and quality furniture.
The MFPC is optimistic about the future of Malaysian furniture. Total furniture exports is projected to reach RM10 billion by 2010, a feat not impossible considering the production capacity and capability as well as the maturity and experience of the industry.
My sincere appreciation goes out to all the staff of MFPC for their commitment and hard work, and members of the Board for their invaluable support and guidance. On behalf of the Board and staff of the MFPC, I wish to thank the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities, as well as related agencies, for their immense support and cooperation during the past years. We are confident that the close collaboration and cooperation between us will help to steer the Malaysian furniture industry to greater success in the years to come.
Thank you.
